Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a therapy that has been utilized for over 5,000 years. It uses specific points on the body to achieve many different responses. Research has shown that around the acupuncture points are beds of nerve endings and blood vessels, and when stimulated the body releases up to 30 known chemicals. These chemicals may cause a change in the electrical resistance of the muscles, may decrease inflammation or to promote healing, will directly affect the nervous system to block pain and can indirectly affect the organs and inter-workings of the body.
Acupuncture is most frequently used in veterinary medicine to relieve pain and muscle spasms and to increase nerve regeneration and circulation. It is used in treating arthritis, skin conditions, organ dysfunction, reproductive complications and immune disorders. There are several types of acupuncture that may be used based on patient needs, including: dry needle, aqua puncture (with B-12 or homeopathic injections), electro acupuncture or laser acupuncture.
Treatment times and frequency are determined based on patient’s need and response to treatment. More than 95% of animals respond to treatment.

Chiropractic or Spinal Manipulation
Chiropractic care is useful in both human and animal medicine. By restoring normal motion to the spine, pelvic area and limbs through chiropractic adjustments, animals can experience a reduction in pain and inflammation and increased performance of joints and tissues. It also allows for the nervous system to function normally, potentially preventing further injury and stress on the body.
Chiropractic therapy is most frequently used in veterinary medicine for pain and arthritis. But it is also for vestibular disease (to help with balance and posture), lameness, and possibly reproductive issues.
Treatment frequency varies from weekly or longer and may include massage, passive range of motion and stretching.
Further veterinary training is required for both acupuncture and chiropractic care. They are rapidly becoming more popular in veterinary medicine, as we realize there are other things we can do for our pets. Please call if you have any questions or if you think that your pet may benefit from these therapies.
Dr. Strat is available on alternating Fridays for veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic work. Doctor Horton highly recommends her services.
